My sincerest thanks for stopping by and seeing these “stories in silver”. The word photography literally means “light writing”. Photography has taught me to really see, not to just look at something. These humble images are the stories of the beauty I see in the places I am blessed to visit. Sometimes these stories are dramatic; they might take place early in the morning on a foggy beach in California or a sweltering afternoon in the Everglades. Sometimes these stories are more romantic; it could be a snowy day on a Chester County farm, or an October hike through a Pennsylvania forest. Most of the stories are just for me, aids to memory about a spiritual encounter I had wandering alone in a beautiful place. A few I choose to share with others, I hope you enjoy them.

All these images you see are completely mine. I start with film, chemicals and photographic paper. With these tools I am able to see the magic that happens in the field and in my darkroom. I wander around with my camera until something cries out to me, wanting its story to be told. I usually make several feeble attempts before I am able to say anything with any success. The places I photograph I prefer to visit multiple times, and I don't usually make photographs of great importance until I have done so. There is a certain intimacy that I like to have with a place before I feel able to tell a story about it.

I prefer to print in the darkroom when the rest of the world sleeps, usually finishing my day around sunrise. When things are quiet, I feel I am able to hear what the image is saying to me, and be transported back to the time and place where I made the negative. I can smell the salt air, or feel the cool mist coming off a waterfall. I am able to remember what needs to be said about that place. I can remember the story it told me, and then tell it in my own words.

Some are able to write or paint about these life-altering experiences. I choose to share the stories about what I see, hear and feel with a camera, some chemicals and a lot of silver.
